Badminton Do’s and Don’ts

We would like to assume that you are here again because you have fallen deeply in love with the game of badminton and we also have nothing against that because all of us here are also in the deepest level of love when it comes to this very exciting and amazing game.

Badminton has become a way of life to you and me and it seems like it is part of our weekly routines after work, after school, and etc. It has become a part of us and we would really want to be better with this game that’s why here are some things that will help us become the best that we can be in playing this game.

Here are some of the Do’s and Don’ts in the badminton game that you need to know to make yourself look a decent and professional player;

Do’s

1. Do your stretching first. Start with your head and down to your toes to protect you from any kind of injuries.

2. We know that you are excited to play the game right away but do not rush, start with warm up by hitting some shuttles before going into the match.

3. Get a grip by holding a racket in a shake hands grip. Try it very loose first then adjust your grip as you find the need to adjust it.

4. Develop a decent serve, for example if your forehand service is decent already like for example 19 out of 20 effective serves then keep it that way. Hence, change to your backhand that you are having a hard time serving with.

5. Return serve low and shallow if possible or a punchy return low to mid/rear court. Then if there’s any lose service there should be a punishment.

6. Keep on your toes with feet close to the ground, try bouncing and gliding around the court rather than run take note that good players never practice flat footedness and never stomp and don’t appear to rush.

7. Practice your backward movement. Yes it can be a rare movement in everyday life but an essential movement in badminton. Work out the best way to get back quickly. You’ll know that serious injuries can result if you cannot maintain your balance always maintain your weight forward.

8. Always remember your angles and math, know that a diagonal is considerably longer than a straight line, so it is always that a strong hard diagonal shots to the rear are more likely to stay in the court.

9. Always keep that badminton rackets head up practice lifting it just above the head height when on the attack, and ready to strike. When defending racket head should be lower and still ready to strike.

10. Get one of you to the net in a doubles game if you are on the attack so you can have a surprise strike when an opportunity comes.

11. Clear high to backhand side rather than forehand, take note that most of the players find it more difficult to play the full range of shots on their backhand side bear in mind that left handers as their backhand side is a right hander’s forehand.

12. Make use of the technology since a lot of training videos, routines, and etc. are available online you can watch them and learn from them on the different shots and tricks that you can do.

Don’ts

1. We know that because badminton and tennis are a racket game then do not bring your tennis ground strokes to the badminton court because that will not help you. All there long sweeping shots will be useless on the badminton game, so always play a wrist shots in front of you.

2. Do not lift to the forecourt or mid court. It will surely come back with interest.

3. Do not stand side by side with your partner because it will not help you most specially during serve on return of serve, non-server or non-returner should be behind their partner straddling the center line so they can retrieve shuttles on forehand or backhand side with ease.

4. Relax and don’t let the pressure of the game get into you. Do not be intimidated immediately by your opponents, trust your practice and training, and always know that all players make mistakes even the Olympic medalists.

5. Do not let the shuttle get behind you, it is in your training that you should be on the area where you need to be to anticipate the shuttle and return it. Once it does you’ll surely lose a point and worst it can cost you the game.

6. Do not forget that you should also cover your partner in doubles badminton game.

7. One more thing is that you should not do back immediately after your short serve. Anticipate and assess the situation to deal with any short returns and be ready as always.

8. Do not look behind you if you see the that shuttle will gone past you to see what your partner is doing about it but you should have a good plan beforehand on what areas to cover.

One last thing is that you should keep in mind that you can do all this things with practice and with dedication.
