How to Increase your Badminton Smash Power

Maybe one of the hardest question to ask but has the easiest answer is that how to increase the power of your smashes or how to improve the backhand, there are a lot of simple adjustments you can make that will help you increase power and improve your accuracy in the smash or in your striking.

Here are the things that you need to focus on and the exercise that you need to do in order to improve your play, always keep in mind that your body capabilities will go hand in hand with your play improvements.

Always train your feet. So maybe you are asking why your feet? The answer is very simple, if your opponent strike the shuttle and you don’t have the speed and the agility to get behind the shuttle before you hit it, then there is no way you are going to hit a good powerful and accurate smash.

You need to go behind the shuttle so your body weight is ready to move in the direction of your smash always add your body weight to the smash and it can really provide more power.

Exercise 1

Be sure that you know how to check first if you are moving fast enough to get behind the shuttle. So here goes the first exercise that you need to do, stand on the front service line and ask your feeder to lift the shuttle towards the back line. Now all you need to do is to beat the shuttle. But don’t hit the shuttle, the only thing that you need to do is allow it to hit the floor and note the position it lands in relation to your body.

Make sure that the shuttle position is sufficiently in front of your body that you can hit it down, allowing your body weight to move forward. If you are moving to close to the shuttle and not using your body weight in striking then you just found out one element you need to improve that will add more power to your smash.

So next time try to move faster, going beyond where you would normally stop. Test again the position of the shuttle and your position, repeat and repeat this exercise until you are comfortable that you’ve got it right.

Then the last exercise is test again by moving back and this time hit the shuttle as hard as you can. Work it from time to time because for sure if you are not really comfortable with that the first few shots will fall into the net.

Exercise 2

Check the strength of your grip. A lot of badminton cub and league players are moving and hitting with excessive tension in their bodies. This tensions are caused by getting to the shuttle on time, frustration form wanting to hit the shuttle better or score more points this might seem minor but causing a major issue.

When your body is super tense, you will be unable to perform anywhere near its optimum capability. A tense body cannot move as fast, hit as fast or as powerfully and accurately as one that is relaxed, and free from tension. Isn’t correct that if we are playing an opponent that we think inferior on us we play way better and we appear to move so much faster. It is only because you are not under pressure so you need to relax, breath in and breath out before playing to remove that jitters and so that you can release the best in you. Try to focus your mind and focus on your strengths and not on how good or bad your opponent is.

Now about your grip if you grip your badminton racquet too tight, then your muscles will be constantly under tension. This does not allow them to flow and carry out you instructions to move in a certain way in order to hit the shuttle.

A tight grip also restricts the amount of power available to these muscles that can always lead to a poor result and disappointment for the player. Also be very careful because if you are unaware or unconscious that you consistently grip the shuttle too tight, then you’re running the risk of injuring your elbow. It is not necessary that if you have a strong grip you have a very powerful smash.

Exercise 3

Now the next thing that you need to do is to go on the court then be conscious with your grip try to hit shuttles with a very relaxed grip. But be sure that you grip it firm enough that it won’t slip out of your hand, you don’t want to see the whites of your knuckles or you’re gripping it too tightly. Always play a good overhead shots and the second before your racket connects with the shuttle, squeeze a little tighter.

Then you will see the difference with your shots, you’ll find yourself hitting the shuttle harder as your racquet can accelerate quicker towards the shuttle without the tension to apply the brakes.

With these exercise you will be able to achieve having a perfect grip and a more powerful shot because of the relaxed grip that you have and your muscles will do the magic on your strikes.

Have some fun testing these exercises and hopefully find the one area where you quickly find a little more focus makes a huge difference in the results of your smash.

Lastly do not forget to have some fun playing the game that you love because when you are too obsessed with training and being competitive you might forget the first thing that is very important and that is the game of badminton is used for socialization and healthy competition.
