Unveiled the First Badminton Racquets Sports Museum in Auckland

The former kings and queen of the court Jeff Robson, and Heather Robson, and Richard Purser have opened up the country’s first ever racquet sports museum.

The former champions recently opened the Badminton Museum of New Zealand at the Auckland Badminton Hall at 99 Gillies Ave, Epsom, after four years of collecting and collating. The badminton racquets on the museum starts from the wood to aluminum.

“We started to realize how valuable some of the relics were and they should never be lost”

“It all sort of started from there,” Jeff Robson said.

“Some of the things took quite a bit of time to find”

“We knew what existed and what we wanted but it took a long time to get them.”

One of the most hard earned badminton racquet is the first New Zealand badminton team to play Australia in 1938. That was found in the archives of the Masterton council office. A lot of relics include commemorative medals from every Commonwealth Games since badminton was introduced in 1966, as well as racquets from all of the major eras – covering wood all the way through to aluminum.

The founders of this project has realized that this deed was way larger than what they have imagined. They were able to create a halls-worth of rich badminton history and amazing stories, and choosing the Auckland Badminton Hall as the location is like divine intervention.

“More people go through this hall than anywhere else in the country, so it was the obvious place,” Heather Robson said.

But despite being the collectors of valuable artifacts, all three king and queens of the badminton are prolific in their own right.

Jeff Robson and Purser both hold the record for New Zealand singles titles with nine each, while heather Robson holds the record for the ladies with seven so they are the real Kings and Queen of the badminton sports and there’s no stopping them from creating their legacy on and off the court. Their records can be put to the museum as well, for they are all valuable to the history of badminton as well.

One thing is for sure because of their love for the game of badminton all the new comers will forever be thankful with them for all their contributions and for the inspiration to give glory to the game that they love their whole life.
